 The C-Console concept

The evolution of the virtual control surface

C-Console began in 1997 as a simple concept: create a virtual mixing surface for MIDI-controllable hardware mixers that feels as comfortable and efficient as a hardware mixer. It evolved into a sophisticated, versatile alternative in desktop audio software, a series of products so unique that they've defined a whole new product category: the virtual control surface.Single-point control over all of your audio hardware and software...that's the dream. It was realized long before C-Console arrived on the scene by the integration of librarians with sequencers and desktop recording packages. But as any desktop audio enthusiast knows all too well, that dream hasn't always been a sweet one. What C-Mexx did was refine the virtual surface to an artform, make it more than just an add-on and turn it into a tool that doesn't simply do the job, but does the job right...at a price that brings it within reach of even the hobbyist on a budget.Dedication that only true audio enthusiasts can provideC-Console isn't a software designer's idea of what a virtual mixing surface should be...it's an audio engineer's idea of what good audio software should be. C-Mexx is owned, operated and staffed by people who are musicians and engineers at heart, and software designers and marketers by trade. The bottom line with every C-Mexx product isn't how well it will sell or how good it looks, but how effectively it serves the end user. From the subtle ergonomic details of the interface to the roaring performance of its advanced automation and recording engine, C-Console is a class act through and through. It does so much more than anything in its class, and does it so much better, that it stands alone as the only professional alternative to direct manual control over your hardware.

Features common to all C-Console products

  • Event memory limited only by system RAM
    - record and play back automation sequences of virtually unlimited length; instantly access one or hundreds of hardware configurations and presets
  • Unique visual design reflecting the best of hardware and software
    - the right mix of full graphical interface and standard Windows component design
    - controls mappable to a full range of input devices: mouse, PC keyboard, joystick or external MIDI controller
  • Extensible interface allows a single C-Console for any hardware product to control a full range of hardware and software devices
    - install a second C-Console product over top of the first, and instantly add full control over a new hardware device to your original C-Console installation
    - the C-Console SDK allows third-party development of new "skins" for existing C-Console products to entirely new interfaces for currently unsupported hardware
    - interfaces designed with a range of needs in mind; nearly all parameters can be accessed and controlled from more than one virtual surface; more popular C-Console products feature the choice of up to four options for controlling the same hardware or parameter set
    - sophisticated parameter mapping allows virtually any control in any application or hardware device to control any other, whether or not that control is directly supported in C-Console...map faders to switches, dials to MIDI notes, or virtually any controller/parameter combination
  • A single interface for all your hardware minimizes learning curve and maximizes productivity
    - standardized interface motifs use known engineering and computing concepts to insure rapid adaptation and a short learning curve
    - simple interface with even the most sophisticated functions never more than five mouse clicks away
    - learn one C-Console and you can instantly work deeply and effectively in new hardware with virtually no adaptation period
  • Compatible with virtually every Windows- or hardware-based recording or audio workstation configuration
    - tested interoperability with all popular audio software packages including Emagic's Logic™, Steinberg's Cubase™ and Wavelab™, Twelve Tone's Cakewalk™, Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge™ and Acid™, Sek'd Samplitude™, IQS' Software Audio Workshop (SAW), Syntrillium's CoolEdit™, and many, many more
  • Sophisticated MIDI remote control for two-way automated control
    - allow C-Console to automate and control your hardware and software, or allow other programs to control your hardware through C-Console; simple step-by-step instructions show how to set up remote control in seconds
  • Real-time visual feedback
    - low- or zero-latency onscreen metering for supported devices (latency depends on transmission type for meter value data)
    - automated mix playback animates C-Console control movements onscreen precisely as they were recorded
  • Solid commitment to support and service
    - C-Console's documentation routinely ranks among the best in any field and is provided in hypertext, document and printable formats to suit every preference
    - a reputation for responsiveness and timely attention to bug fixes and feature requests

 C-Console support

Customer support and service

C-Mexx is striving to develop a rapport with customers unrivalled in the desktop audio industry. Support costs are one of the primary contributors to high software costs, and we've taken a number of steps to help improve the quality and accessibility of end-user support without compromising on price.

  • After-sale service
    - Telephone and e-mail support for specific configuration problems...we can't always solve your problems, but we'll be straight about it when we can't
    - We can't man the phones all the time, and even 24-hour turnaround on email can be too long to wait. We've linked a wide range of support resources both from our website and from our online documentation (helpfiles) to make sure that you never feel completely stranded
    - We're committed to letting our customers drive both the products and their marketing...that's the reason for our on-site polls and customer surveys
  • Upgrade policies
    - By opening up the C-Console interface to third-party developers, we've provided an important avenue for "serendipitous upgrades" through unexpected third-party products and users' group contributions...C-Console can grow as rapidly as users want it to
    - We're currently formulating what we believe will be one of the most attractive upgrade policies in the business, and a product marketing structure that doesn't bleed our customers dry for every little update, feature, add-on or bug fix...more to come about this shortly
  • Tutorials and documentation
    - Complete documentation is available for all C-Console products prior to product purchase. We have attempted to provide some of the finest, easiest-to-use documentation for any product in the audio field.
    - Downloadable video tutorials based on the most commonly-sought information
    - FAQs both on the site and in the online documentation

Peer support

C-Mexx' peer support program isn't just an afterthought. C-Mexx staff and contractors are all MIDI-heads and gear fiends who have as much interest in the products they develop as they have in what they can create with them. We like sharing our best tips and tricks...we need help ourselves from time to time...and we really do love hanging with other audio buffs.

C-Console peer support for every C-Console product consists of the following:

  • Discussion forums for C-Console and specific C-Console products
    - In addition to a main mailing list for C-Console itself, we sponsor a number of web forums for C-Mexx products and audio engineering in general.
    - We also try to maintain a presence on the most popular Internet mailing lists for specific hardware devices supported by C-Console products. (Unfortunately we can't always maintain the level of presence in these forums that we'd like.)
  • File sharing
    - Every C-Console user is encouraged to take advantage of user-contributed files for their C-Console products...effects and EQ libraries, unique remote-control configurations, unusual mixing tricks, user-created utilities for use with or without C-Console.
    - C-Mexx maintains easily-accessible onsite software resources for C-Console users on every product's main page...all the latest files and add-ons are within a few clicks of any product's information sheet
